Ideas

What fits into 25 minutes?

Twenty-five minutes is one pomodoro: the focus session at the heart of the Pomodoro Technique.

  • One Pomodoro focus session on a single task
  • A writing, coding or study sprint
  • A 25-minute run or workout
  • Finally starting a task you keep putting off

Press Start and the countdown begins. You can pause, add a minute or reset at any time, and an alarm sounds when time is up. Need another length? Choose a quick-start time or enter your own; the online timer also takes any time up to 99 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Why 25 minutes?

Francesco Cirillo, who created the Pomodoro Technique in the late 1980s, used 25-minute sessions: long enough to make real progress, short enough to stay focused. It is a starting point, and many people prefer 30 or 50 minutes.

What should I do when the 25 minutes are up?

Take a 5-minute break, then start another session. After four sessions, take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. The Pomodoro timer does all of this for you automatically.

Will the alarm sound if I switch to another tab?

Yes. The timer keeps running in the background and the alarm plays when time is up, as long as the tab stays open and your device isn’t muted. The time left is also shown in the tab’s title.

Why is there no sound?

Check that "Alarm sound" is on, that your device isn’t muted, and on iPhone that the silent switch is off. Browsers only allow sound after you have clicked something on the page, so start the timer with a click or a key press.
